What ADHD actually is
ADHD is a difference in how your brain handles focus, follow-through, and self-regulation. It is not a measure of effort, intelligence, or character.
Almost all of it traces back to one system: executive function, your brain’s manager. It runs planning, starting tasks, organizing, remembering, and switching gears. When it works differently, so does everything downstream.
The two chemicals behind it
Focus and follow-through are closely tied to two brain chemicals. Research suggests they often sit at different levels in ADHD brains, which is part of why stimulants can help.
Why it looks different in adults
“But I’m not hyperactive” is exactly why so many people go undiagnosed for decades. ADHD doesn’t disappear when you grow up. It goes quiet.
- The hyperactivity turns inward. The kid who couldn’t sit still becomes the adult whose brain won’t stop running: mental tabs, the 2am spiral, no off switch.
- “Can’t focus” becomes “can’t stop overcompensating”: the systems, lists, and alarms it takes to look normal while working twice as hard.
- The meltdown becomes the shutdown: quiet burnout and avoidance, which reads as moody or lazy instead of the same condition in a grown-up disguise.
You didn’t grow out of it. You grew a costume over it. Recognizing the adult version is often the first step to being seen.
Why so many adults are only finding out now
For decades, ADHD meant the hyperactive boy at the back of the class. Quiet daydreamers, especially women, didn’t fit that picture, so they were missed by design. Today’s rise in diagnoses is largely the same people finally being counted, not new ones appearing.
It’s also highly heritable. Plenty of adults recognize themselves while sitting in their own child’s evaluation, the recognition running backwards: child first, then parent.
